UK SEARCH ENGINES  [followed by UK Directories]

  • searchUK
The search engine automatically indexes UK sites. It has excellent search features with a very useful interactive tutorial on how to use them. searchUK claims to cover over 95% of the .uk domain, "making it the most extensive search engine in the world." Other major search engines (listed below) also have 'UK only' filters. BUT - for most situations you are better off using searchUK which specialises in tracking down UK sites even if they don't have 'uk' extensions. See 'How to Do Field Searching' in the Search Help section below for ways of limiting web search engines to UK sites.
  • GoFromHere
The best 'all-in-one' search page of the top search engines + useful comments about each one. It's very quick and has many extra features. It is UK-based but searches the whole web. GoFromHere used to be Surf Searcher from Melt.

UK DIRECTORIES   [See above for UK Search Engines]

In general ... 'directories' list any sites that are submitted and that do not contravene the rules of the directory. Site descriptions are generally written by those who submit the sites. Most directories operate like free billboards. Each directory has its own unique pattern of categories - which can be confusing.
  • UK Index
  • Yahoo UK and Ireland
  • Data Gold
  • Lifestyle UK
  • Yell.com
  • UK GUIDES and AWARDS

In general ... 'guides' are smaller, more selective than directories, with independent site descriptions written by the people who compile the guide.
  • The BBC Web Guide
  • .net magazine's Top 100
  • Mirago's Web Guides
  • LookSmart UK LookSmart.com claims to be ''the largest selective directory on the Internet''
