Accelerated
Learning involves drawing on a much greater range of the
brain's abilities than are stimulated in the sterile, stereotypical
classroom.
If you happen to work outdoors, you will already appreciate that the multi-sensory stimulation of the 'outdoor' classroom provides an ideal environment for accelerated learning. (Has anyone written this book yet? Bill Krouwel has made a start) Most books about accelerated learning seem to assume that learners are indoors. One of the most interesting books below is 'The Learning Revolution' - the best-selling book that is itself designed on the principles of accelerated learning. The active and creative reviewing methods described on this site (see panel opposite) provide further examples of multi-sensory accelerated learning that harness more of the brain's abilities. Review: How much would you pay for a better memory? This simple method works (I have tried it!). You can learn about it by taking a look at a free online 25 slide Power Point presentation which introduces you to the world of Snapse and how IPEimaging can help you memorise things. The idea may be simple, but the book helps you to see different examples of how it works. And seeing is everything in this method. Because IPE = Image Processing Engine = our brains which like to see things! (Review by Roger Greenaway) |
There was a time when IQ was considered the leading determinant of
success. In this fascinating book, based on brain and behavioural
research, Daniel Goleman argues that our IQ- idolising view of
intelligence is far too narrow. Instead, Goleman makes the case for
"emotional intelligence" being the strongest indicator of human
success. He defines emotional intelligence in terms of self-awareness,
altruism, personal motivation, empathy and the ability to love and be
loved by friends, partners, and family members. People who possess high
emotional intelligence are the people who truly succeed in work as well
as play, building flourishing careers and lasting, meaningful
relationships. Because emotional intelligence isn't fixed at birth,
Goleman outlines how adults as well as parents of young children can
sow the seeds. (Amazon.com)
Synopsis: This study argues that "emotional intelligence" is more important than a high IQ in terms of how one performs in life. It claims that qualities such as impulse control, persistence, zeal, self-motivation, empathy and social deftness are the characteristics of people who excel. Interview with Daniel Goleman with Martin Delahoussaye, editor of Training Journal. Research about the unreliability of Emotional Intelligence measures: Davies Stankov, & Roberts, (1998). "Emotional intelligence: In search of an elusive construct." Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, 75(4), 989-1015]. |
Synopsis:
This text is a combination of a "how-to" guide and a "plug and play"
resource. Liz Brant and Tony Harvey explain the theories behind music
in training and help debunk some of the myths. They also provide
practical advice on identifying appropriate music and choosing audio
equipment. This resource offers a concise guide to the traps associated
with music in training. The theory is sufficient to convince anyone who
has not used music before to experiment with confidence. By bringing
together "proven" tracks for particular applications, the authors
should save both novices and experienced users time and money that they
would otherwise spend in accumulating CDs from which to draw one or two
tracks. The accompanying CD
ROM includes 20 tracks (nearly 75 minutes of music).
Please note you will need the appropriate PRS and PPL licences in order
to use any music in your training. This guide provides details of how
to obtain these licences which, once obtained, entitle you to use the
music on the CD without further reference to Gower Publishing Limited.

Synopsis: The Inner Edge reflects authors Ron Jue's and Richard Wedemeyer's practical approach to this yearning to find meaning amid the tough realities of the workplace. Their down-to-earth, effective program called Pragmatic Spirituality shows readers how to find spiritual fulfillment and balance in life and work minus any religious overtones... Guided imagery, visualizations and meditations show readers how to access intuitive powers for making valid decisions. Overall, the tone is interactive, prescriptive and helpful. Filled with mini-cases and examples to which most mid-level professionals will relate, The Inner Edge is easily digestible for today's business professional. The text is engaging and provocative and not overloaded with New Age jargon and concepts. (from the back cover) |
Synopsis:
At the beginning of the twentieth century, as psychologists discovered
ways and means to measure intelligence, Aristotle's definition of man
as "a rational animal" developed into an obsession with IQ. In the
mid-1990s, Daniel Goleman popularized research into emotional
intelligence, EQ, pointing out that EQ is a basic requirement for the
appropriate use of IQ. There is enough collective evidence from
psychology, neurology, anthropology and cognitiv science to show us
that there is a third "Q", "SQ" or Spiritual Intelligence. Unlike IQ,
which computers have and EQ which exists in higher mammals, SQ is
uniquely human and, the author argues, the most fundamental of the
three. It is linked to humanity's need for meaning, an issue very much
at the forefront of people's minds as the century draws to a close. SQ
is what we use to develop our longing and capacity for meaning, vision
and value. It allows us to dream and to strive. (Amazon.co.uk) Reviews Paperback Edition |
Review: Self-help
professionals Lee Carroll and Jan Tober have collected essays by dozens
of doctors, counselors, and other childhood experts that seem to
document the arrival on earth of a newly evolved species of kid
referred to here as an "indigo" child. The 10 most common traits are:
2) They have a feeling of deserving to be here. 3) Self-worth is not a big issue. 4) They have difficulty with authority by ritual or without explanation. 5) They simply will not do certain things. 6) They get frustrated with systems that don't require creative thought. 7) They often see better ways of doing things. 8) School is often difficult for them and they can seem anti-social. 9) They will not respond to emotional blackmail. 10) They are not shy in letting you know what they need. |
Judging by my own experience, learning golf in one minute must be the ultimate in accelerated learning! Think of all those hours that Tiger Woods could have saved if only he had read this book! But if you really enjoy playing golf will you not be saving all your minutes on other activities so that you spend even more minutes playing your favourite game? I haven't read the book. I'm just fascinated by the title. (Roger Greenaway) |
