The 20 Best-Selling Books in Roger's Active Learning Bookshop

This bookshop is designed to help you shop around for the best deals. All books on this page are available both from Amazon.com (in US Dollars) and Amazon.co.uk (in GB Pounds). Take care to choose the button that takes you to your preferred country/currency. And look out for bargains in both currencies.

This top twenty is revised annually. It is interesting to look out for trends from year to year. There are always several collections of team activities in the top twenty: books with lots of activities and a low price tag seem to sell best of all. (But there are plenty of smart buyers around who avoid books with poor reviews - simply collecting lots of activities is not enough to sell a book.) However, this year many of the new entries and fast climbers belong to a different category - which I would call 'easy to read guides' to the skills of facilitating groups and workshops.

For example, Zen of Groups has climbed 7 places to the top spot, and a new entry at 19 is 'Once Upon a Group' which has been around since the 1980's and is still, in my view, the best book to read when first working with groups. Perhaps No. 20 is the start of a new trend - it is one of a series of student workbooks on emotional intelligence. The trend? Buying books for participants as well as for the facilitator??

  1. Zen of Groups:
A Handbook for People Meeting With a Purpose

Dale Hunter, Anne Bailey, Bill Taylor
  2. Good stuff for novice and experienced group leaders. I saw this book being used by a trainer I was working with, and had to buy it.
It covers all types of groups, from a bunch of friends coming together to arrange a holiday away, to experienced therapeutic groups. The authors forgo the normal forming, storming etc in favour of a more sophisticated model of group development, and then elegantly show how this model can apply to all groups. ...
This is a powerful text, suitable for all levels, with stuff you will want to read over and over again. If you only buy one "group" book, get this one...

  3. Quick Team-building Activities for Busy Managers:
50 Exercises That Get Results in Just 15 Minutes

    Brian Cole Miller
  4. Synopsis: This guide offers 50 proven exercises any manager can use without spending lots of money. These group activities are designed with the non-trainer in mind. It features a special chapter on troubleshooting and dealing with unexpected difficulties in team-building. (Amazon.co.uk)

  5. Team Building Through Physical Challenges
Donald R. Glover, Daniel W. Midura
  6. Synopsis: The activities in "Team Building Through Physical Challenges" are designed to develop interpersonal skills as well as motor skills. These 22 Outward Bound-type tasks challenge students to work together to achieve a common goal. They aim to teach students to value teamwork, practise leadership skills, improve listening skills, and appreciate individual differences. The activities in "Team Building Through Physical Challenges" are broken down into three levels - introductory, intermediate, and advanced. These levels make the challenges ideal for students in primary and secondary schools. (Synopsis continued at amazon.co.uk)

  7. The Big Book of Motivation Games:

    Robert Epstein, Jessica Rogers

  9. The Icebreakers Pocketbook
    Alan Evans, Paul Tizzard
  10. Review: At last - a clear guide to communication without the gimmick. This book has become an invaluable guide in our training department, where we were having to take a "one size fits all" approach to dealing with individuals with diverse needs due to the cost of sending our team on expensive networking and communications training - none of which covered the broad range of issues we needed. Tizzard's style is refreshingly staighforward and non-jargonistic, without being patronising. The layout lent itself well to my flick and find method of researching (hurrah) and has obviously been written by a seasoned practitioner as well as intelligent theoretician. (from a reviewer at Amazon.co.uk)

Review: No quicker way of bringing a spark to your training sessions. When designing your training sessions one of the keys to success is hooking in your delegates straight away. This pocketbook may be small, but is crammed with excellent ideas on how to grab the group and set the scene. Unlike other icebreaker books I've seen, the authors of this one have gone one step further and grouped them under common course headings. So under "Communication" there are 10 activities for you to choose from! (from another reviewer at Amazon.co.uk)
